North Shore Mountains Cross Country Ski Trails

Schroeder, Tofte, Lutsen & State Parks trail system is 196K of interconnected trails

Starting at Cross River in Schroeder and extending northeast to Bally  Creek, which is west of Grand Marais.

Temperance River State Park Cross Country Ski Trails

On Hwy 61 on west side of Temperance River in Schroeder, or east of Cross  River, go north on the gravel Skou Road for 1/4 mile 218-663-7476

Amenities - restrooms in State Park & shelters along trail

Fees - MN Ski Pass required and if you park in the State Park, a Park  Permit is required; both sold at office (open 8am-4:30pm daily)

Level of Difficulty - easy to more difficult

Sugarbush Cross Country Ski Trails

From Hwy 61 in Tofte, drive north on Sawbill Trail (County Road 2) for 2  miles

Fees - MN Ski Pass required

Connects - to the Leveux Trail System

Level of Difficulty - easy, more difficult & most difficult

Trail Description
2.9K easy Inner Loops (great for kids), and 

Intermediate loops 
3.1K Hogback Trail
1.7K Bridge 
7.3K Homestead 

Carlton Peak Cross Country Ski Trails

From Hwy 61 in Tofte, drive north on Sawbill Trail (County Road 2) for 2  miles

Fees - MN Ski Pass required

Level of Difficulty - easy & more difficult 

Trail Description
2.2K to summit of Carlton's Peak

Intermediate 3K downhill run to Bluefin Bay access is north of Hwy 61 across from the  resort and intersects with the snowmobile trail heading 3.8K to Temperance

Moose Fence Cross Country Ski Trails

From Hwy 61 in Tofte, drive north on Sawbill Trail (County Road 2) for 7  1/2 miles to the White Pine Blister Rust Research sign 

Fees - MN Ski Pass required

Level of Difficulty - easy, more difficult & most difficult

Trail Description
1K trail leading to two easy loops.

The Upland (2.4K) and the Maple  (3.4K) and the 3.1K advanced connector trail to the Picnic Loop (see  Sugarbush description above)

From Hwy 61 in Lutsen, drive north on Onion River Rd (FR 336), shortly  after mile marker 88, for 2 miles to parking.

Fees - MN Ski Pass required

Level of Difficulty - easy, more difficult & most difficult

tracked & skating lanes.

More difficult 8.1K Oberg Trail

4K skating  trail is the continuation of FR 336 north of parking lot.

2.6K ski to Lutsen Resort's Sea  Villas or 7K to the golf course.

From Hwy 61 at Superior National at Lutsen Golf course

Fees - none

Connects - west to Leveaux and east to Massie/Hall Loops

Level of Difficulty - easy & more difficult

Trail Description
the golf course offers an easy ski through a windblown, 2K loop and hooks  on to the 5K Homestead Trail, which crosses the Poplar River, the Lutsen  Scientific & Natural Area of beautiful old growth trees before ending at the Caribou Trail (County Road 4)

From Hwy 61 in Lutsen, drive north on Caribou Trail (County Road 4); at  Solbakken Resort; or off Hwy 61 just east of Solbakken, drive north on  the Hall Rd (County Road 41)

Connects - west to Lutsen/Poplar and east to Cascade trails 

Level of Difficulty - easy to more difficult

25K tracked & skating lane.

Cascade River State Park Trails (on river's west side)
At Hwy 61 parking or take the park road in to parking

Deer Yard Cross Country Ski Trails

From Hwy 61, drive north on County Road 7 to County Road 44, north to  Pike Lake Road (County Road 45), then west to intersection with forest  road, and west on road in to parking (known locally as Babineau Corner.)

Fees - MN Ski Pass required and if you park in the State Park, a Park  Permit is required; both sold at office (open 10am-4pm weekends)

Level of Difficulty - easy, more difficult & most difficult
Connects - southwest to Cascade River and north to Bally Creek

Trail Description
tracked only trails; ski the easy 3K trail or ski the more difficult Deer  Yard loop.

Bally Creek Cross Country Ski Trails

From Hwy 61, drive northeast on County Road 7 to County Road 48, then  north to Forest Road 158 (Bally Creek Rd), take Forest Road 158 in about  2 miles.

Level of Difficulty - easy to more difficult

Connects - south to the Deer Yard and Cascade trail systems

Trail Description
25K with skating on 8K of unplowed road (FR158 beyond parking area)

10.4K  Moose Trail, a downhill connector to the Cascade River State Park system.
